Where I got my start: a story of CISV
April 20, 2016What is Sustainable Development?
April 25, 2016The International Mother Earth Day is commemorated every year on the 22nd of April. It is a global movement that celebrates the planet and encourages people to be more environmentally friendly.
The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970 in the US after a devastating oil spill. “Earth Day is the largest, most recognisable face of the environmental movement,” said Kathleen Rogers, President of the Earth Day Network.
The health of our planet is in our hands and every action or small change will have a positive impact on the earth. Do you know how you can contribute? Here are seven things that you can start doing today.
Reduce, reuse, recycle
Recycling unwanted paper, bottles, etc. is a great earth saving tip. Recycled paper takes 74% less air pollution and 35% less water pollution to make.
Save water
Keep a jug or a bottle of drinking water in the fridge. Running tap water to cool it off for drinking water is wasteful.
Save energy
Change the type of light bulb you use, use compact fluorescent light bulbs. They last eight times as long as standard incandescent bulbs and they use 75 % less energy.
Drive less
When you drive, consider slowing down; driving at 50mph uses 25% less fuel than 70mph. The biggest pollution emitting fumes are caused by oil and gasoline.
Go online
Think if you really need a paper phone book. If not, call to stop phone book delivery and use an online directory instead.
Plant a tree
It could help more in reducing global warming than any other method. Trees not only give oxygen, but also take in carbon dioxide during the process of photosynthesis, which is the main source of global warming.
Spread awareness
Always try your best to educate people about global warming and its causes and after affects. You can also tell them how they can contribute their part by saving energy that will be good for the environment.
Don’t forget how important our planet is, it is our home. And remember that every day is earth day!
